Boldmere St. Michaels 4 - 0 Oadby Town
The Mikes continued their excellent form from Saturday as they brushed visitors Oadby Town aside thanks to a scintillating first half display.
The Mikes came out of the blocks at a furious pace, harrying and pressing their opponents all over the pitch. The only surprise was that it took five minutes to open their account. The ball broke free in the box and Ricky Baker's right foot drive found the net via a deflection.
Oadby looked to break at speed, but failed to unduly trouble the home defence.
On 19 minutes, the Mikes doubled their lead. Kirk Smith swing in a teasing free kick from the left flank. Stuart McNaught needed no second invitation and timed his run perfectly to glance a header over the stranded Pearson in the visitors goal.
Not only was the goal a significant milestone in McNaught's season by taking him into double figures from midfield, but it was also a major milestone in the history of the club.
The goal was the club's 1,000th in league competition since the formation of the Midland Football Alliance.
The Mikes were rampant, and looked like scoring with every attack. The vistors were struggling to put together any spells of possession as the Mikes closed them down. It was three before half time, as Ricky Baker sidefooted home following a flowing move on 38 minutes.
The pace of the second period was somewhat slower, with the Mikes seemingly content to sit on their lead, as the vistors enjoyed plenty of possession, but mostly in front of the home defence. Having comfortably soaked up spells of Oadby possession, the Mikes showed a killer instinct to put the game to bed.
On 70 minutes, the Mikes countered down the right. The home side appeared for a penalty as Swain appeared to be clipped. Any debate was short-lived as the ball ran loose for Kirk Smith, who fired an emphatic left-foot drive past Pearson ito the top corner from 16 yards.
The Mikes had another chance when Tom Stevenson's close range header was cleared off the line by Orton when he really should have found the target.
The game was over as a contest, and the Mikes saw out their clean sheet with only one alarm, Adam Jenkins bravely blocking at the near post with five minutes to go.
Rob Mallaband experessed his satisfaction that his team kept their form from Saturday and started the game so brightly.
He will look for more of the same on Saturday as the Mikes face a stern test when they make the short trip to Coleshill Town in the Aspire Midland Football Alliance (B46 3JQ ko 3pm).
The Mikes then face Highgate United on Tuesday 7th April (ko7.30) in the home leg of their Polymac Services League Cup semi final, looking look to capitalise on a 2-0 lead from the first leg. They know the contest is far from over, Highgate leaving the Trevor Brown Memorial with all three points only four days after that first leg.
