Boldmere St. Michaels Reserves 2-0 Oadby Town Reserves‏

Wednesday 10th March 2010
Midland Football Combination Challenge Trophy Quarter Final
The Mikes Reserves 2-0 Oadby Town Reserves

The Mikes marched through to the semi finals of the Challenge Trophy with a superb team performance to overcome a strong Oadby side, maintaining their grip on the competition they have won in both of the last two seasons.

The visitors showed a completely different team from that due to play when the game was postponed just before kick off a fortnight previously, including several players who had appeared in the recent first team clash.

The visitors started quickly and penned the Mikes back in the early stages, but the home defence was resolute and chances were at a minimum. The Mike gradually found their rhythm, getting the upper hand before the break, forcing the visiting keeper into regular action, but without creating anything clear cut.

The breakthrough came just before half time, and had an element of fortune about it. Johaine Thompson bravely moved in to charge down the keeper’s clearance as he looked to sweep up behind his defence. He succeeded in making the block, and enjoyed the bounce of the ball to walk the ball home.

Half Time: The Mikes 1-0 Oadby Town

The goal gave The Mikes the momentum they needed, and their tremendous work rate never allowed the visitors to get a grip on the game. They looked a constant threat going forward, and Thompson doubled the lead with his second goal of the game.

The visitors were only allowed one sight of goal, but Adam Jenkins was equal to it, superbly blocking a far post volley with his feet.

This was enough to ensure that the Mikes saw out the rest of the game with little further alarm, as The Poachers were reduced to trying their luck from distance.
