The Mikes Reserves completed their home league campaign with a 2-0 win over Banbury United that took them up to second place in the table.
The Mikes started brightly and looked like they had taken the lead early on when Jorma Seabourne’s cross was forced home by Johaine Thompson, but the linesman’s flag meant that their joy was short lived.
The lively pitch was dominating proceedings and the play was generally scrappy from both teams. The visitors got on top and should have done better from several shooting opportunities around the edge of the box, but failed to trouble Louis Connor in the home goal. The Mikes still looked dangerous, causing problems from set pieces and with Thompson’s pace and power unsettling the visiting defence.
Half time: The Mikes 0-0 Banbury United
The Mikes upped their tempo after the restart, pushing the visitors back. Thompson was causing mayhem, and he was unlucky when the ball cruelly bobbled as he set himself in front of goal as he miscued wide.
Thompson wasn’t to be denied and was rewarded for his persistence soon afterwards with the opening goal. It was all his own work, heading the ball passed his marker before powering through on goal. Undaunted by his previous misfortune, the Mikes leading scorer drove the ball past the advancing keeper with the outside of his foot, with the ball nestling in the corner via the underside of the bar.
The Mikes were well on top now, and the visitors didn’t threaten an equaliser. Although the home side were doing all the pressing, there is always concern while the score stays 1-0, so it was some relief when Thompson secured the points with his second goal late on. This time he rolled his marker in the box, firing home a low shot via the foot of the post.
