Boldmere St. Michaels Res 3-0 Barwell Res

The Mikes reserves returned to winning ways after making four changes from last week, two youth team stars - Reece Byfield and Shane Maydhew each came in with enormously effective display’s showing a physical desire and passing ability that fitted in perfectly with the reserves playing ethos and will open the door for the pair to make a more regular contribution to the Mikes cause this season. Also joining the stiffs this week was defensive rock Neil Hanlon and top scorer John Williams, both without games for a number of weeks due to fatherhood and suspension respectfully. Barwell for their part fielded there most experienced team of the season, so a difficult game was assumed as always against our old adversaries who finished last season behind Mikes in third spot. The first twenty minutes of the game was a scrappy affair, with both sides jostling for supremacy that was wrestled in Mikes favour by the dynamic duo of Kevin Buxton and Andy Lewis, whose appetite, vision, passing ability and shear determination was a beacon of light for their team-mates to follow. Solid performances from Peter Gould, Sean Butler, John Rutter and the dangerous Kieran Robinson and Jamel Fuller always gave the greater goal threat to Mikes, and three brilliantly worked goals finished by Robinson (2) and Fuller gave Mikes a thoroughly deserved win against a very decent Barwell side that will win far more games then they lose this season. At times Mike’s one touch football was of the highest order and very pleasing on the eye. Jack Brown made a welcome late substitution appearance for Mikes as he starts his long recovery from knee injury.
