Midland Football Combination Reserve Division
Banbury United Reserves 1-2 The Mikes Reserves
The Mikes recorded their first away league victory of the season thanks to a hard-working display at The Spencer Stadium.
Flowing football was at a premium thanks to a difficult surface and strong blustery wind. The home side settled better, but the Mikes looked dangerous as they put together some neat moves down their left flank.
This was the route to taking the lead, as the ball was centred to Mark Mason, who turned on a sixpence to rifle home into the roof of the net from 8 yards.
Ceiran McLean immediately left the field to adjust a strapping, and the home side converted their ‘power play’, equalising after the Mikes failed to clear a swirling cross.
In almost a carbon copy of the opening goal, The Mikes came within inches of regaining their lead. Mason and Jorma Seabourne combined down the left and fed Johaine Thompson with his back to goal. He rolled his marker and drove a fierce shot destined for the top corner, but the home keeper produced a stunning save to tip the ball onto the underside of the bar and to safety.
Banbury United 1-1 The Mikes
The Mikes started the second half firmly on the front foot, with Mason and Thompson causing problems for the home defence. They soon took the lead thanks to a delightful goal. Seabourne outstripped the fullback and cut the ball back for Thompson to clinically slide the ball into the bottom corner for his 20th of the season.
The Mikes defence was looking solid in the second half, with Ramarlo Barrett turning in a commanding performance. They still looked dangerous on the break, with Mason and McLean having excellent strikes blocked and Thompson having an effort saved when he might have squared to the unmarked Mason.
The home side failed to carve out a clear chance, and the closest they came to an equaliser was a dipping volley late on which clipped the roof of the net on its way over. The Mikes comfortably ran down the clock to secure maximum points.
