Behind 'The Mikes' - Issue no.2 - Groundsman

We regularly look to bring you an insight into what goes on behind the scenes at The Trevor Brown Memorial Ground.

In this article, we pay tribute to our award-winning groundsman Brian Harvey.  The Mikes playing surface has been drawing glowing praise from all quarters, notably Aston Villa following their pre season visit, and our new tenants Aston Villa Ladies FC.

It will come as no surprise that Brian’s skills have been recognised once again.  Before the recent home fixture against Malvern Town, Aspire MFA Secretary John Shaw presented Brian with his latest honour, League Winner for Step 5 and 6 in the Football Association’s National Groundsman of the Year Awards 2009.  It’s the second time Brian has received this prestigious award. The panel obviously takes into account the quality of surface produced, but also consider the number of games played on the pitch and the equipment available for the groundsman to use.

Brian is typically modest about his achievements.  “Although in my playing days I was more concerned with stopping those who could play, all I ever wanted was a flat surface to play on.  That’s what I try to provide”.

When asked about being at the mercy of the British weather, Brian is philosophical, replying in his usual matter of fact style: “It’s ironic that I didn’t need to water it during the close season, but now I have to water it every week as we’ve had no rain”.

It’s also no surprise that he is still striving for improvement despite all the compliments: “It will be alright once we get more rain and I can spike it.  Pitches need air.  It’s no use rolling pitches constantly as it messes them up – I learned that from bowling greens.  I prefer to use the drag mat to level out the surface whenever I can”.

Joint Reserve Team Manager Rob Clarke paid tribute to his efforts. “Brian is absolutely top drawer.  We like to play good football and having a quality surface helps.  Brian provides that for us, and all the lads are grateful.  Most away games make us realise just how good our own surface is.  He works wonders considering the amount of use the pitch gets.  It gets so many games, but Brian spends hours on there ensuring it’s always at the highest possible standard.  We are very lucky to have him and he deserves all the accolades he gets”.
