The mikes travelled to Leicestershire hoping to continue this year’s Vase campaign against a Blaby and Whetstone side who although play two levels below them in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division held a win in the previous round over Malvern Town from the same league as the mikes.
On a cold blustery day Boldmere started quickly and in the opening minute Lee Osbourne saw an effort deflected for a corner.
Boldmere made the breakthrough after 5 minutes when a cross from Ricky Baker out wide was fired past Shaney Attcliffe in the Blaby goal by Lee Osbourne to make it one-nil for the visitors.
On 17 minutes a long shot from Boldmere’s Sam Simmonds was saved by Shaney Attcliffe.
Blaby’s first chance came on 29 minutes when a long shot from Daniel Fragnoli went just past the mikes goal. Four minutes later a jumping header from Paul Pallett went just past the post.
On 38 minutes a shot from Kirk Smith was saved by Blaby’s Shaney Attcliffe. A minute later came the home sides best effort to date when a shot from Blaby’s Arthur Appleton was saved by Boldmere’s Sean Butler and the follow up was cleared off the Boldmere goaline by the defence to give the visitors the lead going into the break.
On 51 minutes a cross from Boldmere’s Ricky Baker was met by Jason Holmes who beat two defenders before seeing his shot inside the penalty area being deflected for a corner. The follow up Boldmere corner was cleared away three times by three consecutive Blaby defensive headers . On 63 minutes a long range effort from Boldmere’s Jason Holmes was saved by Shaney Attcliffe.
Boldmere nearly doubled their lead on 71 minutes when only the actions of a Blaby defender cleared a shot by Stuart McNaught off the Blaby goaline. Two minutes later Blaby had another chance when Mark Ashman headed over the Boldmere bar.
On 83 minutes Boldmere’s Kirk Smith shot across the Blaby goalface and with time running out Blaby’s Anthony Allen had a shot deflected for a corner but was Boldmere who held on for the win, some more welcome prize money and a place in Monday’s Third Round Draw.
