Boldmere St. Michaels 0 - 3 Burton Albion

The Mikes welcomed Burton Albion of the Coca- Cola Championship League Two to Church Road for this Birmingham Senior Cup game. Although the side that arrived here was a mix of youth and reserve players it was still going to be a tough test for Rob Mallaband’s men.

Boldmere had an opportunity as early as 3 minutes in when a free kick was tipped over the Burton bar by keeper Shane Redmond.

Burton’s first opportunity came on 28 minutes when a shot was cleared off the Boldmere goaline by a Boldmere defender. In the insuing scramble a Burton player was brought down inside the penalty area and a spot kick was awarded. Up stepped Greg Pearson who saw his effort go in the top corner of the Boldmere net past mikes keeper Sean Butler to open the scoring for the visitors.

Boldmere suffered further misery on 32 minutes when forward Jason Holmes was shown a straight red card by the referee for apparent foul and abusive language.

The ten men kept going and on 39 minutes Lee Osbourne had an effort out wide which was saved by Shane Redmond.

A minute later Burton Albion doubled their lead when a cross was hit home by Greg Pearson taking a deflection off mikes defender Sam Simmonds into the Boldmere net to give the mikes a mountain to climb at the half time break.

The mikes had the first opportunity of the 2nd half on 46 minutes when a Adam Swain cross was headed straight at the goalkeeper by Ricky Baker.

On 53 minutes Boldmere were offered a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty for a Burton handball. Lee Osbourne stepped up to take the spot kick which beat the keeper but could hit the Burton post which seemed to sum the night up.

Burton added a third goal on 63 minutes when a cross was converted by Greg Pearson to complete his hat trick. Late on Simeon Tulloch was clear on goal for the mikes only to be bought down by keeper Shane Redmond who was lucky to only be cautioned and other than a Lee Osbourne long shot late on that safely went past the goal Burton Albion managed to see the game out and earn themselves a place in the third round whilst the mikes could focus on Saturday’s 2nd Round FA Vase trip to Blaby and Whetstone Athletic.
