Boldmere St. Michaels 2-0 Walsall

The Mikes started their Birmingham Senior Cup campaign by welcoming Coca-Cola League side Walsall to Church Road and welcomed back several players who had come through Boldmere's U15 youth team

Walsall started quickly and on 3 minutes Boldmere had to clear away a corner. Three minutes later a cross from Walsall’s Rory Wood was headed over the bar by Peter Till.

On 8 minutes Walsall had a short free kick which was shot over the bar by Sam Adkins. In the process of following the ball over the bar Boldmere’s keeper Adam Jenkins landed awkwardly on his ankle and as a result was replaced by substitute keeper Sean Butler.

Walsall nearly took the lead on 21 minutes when a shot from Alex Nicholls was deflected off defender Sam Simmonds and the post for a corner. Four minutes later Walsall’s Alex Nicholls was in a one on one with Boldmere’s Sean Butler but his effort was saved by the keeper.

Boldmere started to create more chances and on 34 minutes Ricky Baker played a ball over the top which was cleared by the outrushing Tim Cooney in the Walsall goal.. Two minutes later a ball from Boldmere’s Adam Swain found Stuart McNaught who just shot wide of the Walsall goal. On 39 minutes Boldmere had their best chance yet when a ball from Johaine Thompson found Ricky Baker whose effort just went inches wide.

Walsall tried to start the 2nd half strongly and on 46 minutes a shot from Jordan McCourt was punched two handedly over the bar by Sean Butler. On 47 minutes the deadlock was finally broken as Boldmere took a deserved lead as a cross from Johaine Thompson was fired home by Ricky Baker past the Walsall keeper.

On 53 minutes the mikes Stuart McNaught found Kirk Smith who fired straight at the Walsall keeper. Two Minutes later Boldmere’s Johaine Thompson broke clear and was only stopped by the Walsall keeper Tim Cooney whop cleared away for a corner. On 62 minutes Boldmere’s Ricky Baker had a shot from out on the touchline which just flashedc past the Walsall post.

Boldmere kept coming forward and added a second goal on 70 minutes when from a corner Stuart McNaught back headed the ball across the penalty area and Nathan Gough scrambled the ball over the Walsall goal line.

Walsall nearly pulled one back on 77 minutes when Jamie Patterson hit a ball on the volley inside the penalty area but could only hit the Boldmere post and it was comfortably cleared by the defence Boldmere bought on Lee Osbourne and Simeon Tulloch late on to see out the game and it was Boldmere St Michaels who made it over the line to record a famous victory and book a place in the next round of the competition.
