Burton Albion 1-3 Boldmere St. Michaels
The Young mikes next scheduled trip to Redditch United for a League Match was washed out so this brings us to our Trip to Burton Albion to start our defence of the Staffs Youth Cup in a game which was switched from the Pirelli Stadium to the home of Gresley Rovers FC.
On a boggy surface Boldmere got off to a strong start when James Walker shot just wide after 5 minutes and only a minute later he headed just past goal. On 12 minutes a last ditch tackle prevented Jordan gibbons shot from heading in the Burton net.
Then the big talking point on 24 minutes which caused some head scratching amongst the Boldmere contengent. A throw in was quickly taken by Boldmere and Johaine Thompson’s cross found Nathan Wall who fired home to give the young mikes a deserved lead or so we thought. As the players and the referee headed back to the centre circle the Linesman called over the referee and pointed his attention to the fact that the ball which was thrown from the Burton bench was apparently not an official match ball so the goal could not stand.
Eight minutes later the mikes did take the lead when James Walker from the edge of the penalty area hit a shot into the roof of the Burton net.
The 2nd half began with Boldmere dominating again but Burton managed an equaliser on 61 minutes when Jacob Brandon broke free and headed past Steven Clorley.
The Mikes regained the lead two minutes later when Jerome Chambers crossed over for James Walker to tap into The Burton goal.
Boldmere wrapped the game up in the 86th minute when a Reiss Byfield through ball found Johaine Thompson who raced around Burton keeper Daniel Marsh to score and wrap up a famous victory for the young mikes and earn a away trip to Chasetown in the next round.
