Knowle Reserves 2 –1 The Mikes Reserves
Smedley Crooke Memorial Challenge Cup
The holders were unceremoniously dumped out of the Smedley Crooke Cup at the quarter final stage, following an uninspiring contest at Hampton Lane.
Both teams struggled to get to grips with the high wind and the lively surface, and the opening stages were a largely scrappy affair in midfield. Despite this, the Mikes drew first blood midway through the half. Jorma Seabourne fed Adam Morton, who in turn worked the ball out to Simeon Tulloch wide on the right. He beat his marker inside out, before firing across goal for top scorer Johaine Thompson to steer home from six yards.
The Mikes were on top now, but were not testing the home keeper. The home side drew level just before the break following the award of a very soft free kick some 25 yards out. There was nothing debatable about the execution though, as the ball was superbly despatched over the wall and into the top corner.
Half Time: Knowle Reserves 1-1 The Mikes Reserves
The Mikes came out determined to capitalise on their territorial domination. A superb Tulloch free kick totally bamboozled the home defence, but Morton headed wide as Mikes players queued up at the far post.
Morton was then absolutely clattered in the box, but the referee chose to play advantage as the dazed striker got in a shot, but it flew over and the referee waved away what looked like legitimate appeals. The Mikes frustration grew as they were denied another spot kick appeal a few minutes later. Morton looked to lob the bouncing ball over his marker head, but the defender blocked the ball as he challenged with arms raised, but the referee ruled it to be accidental.
Thompson then had a one on one, but failed to get his shot away as the ball bobbled on the pitch, checking inside before being crowded out.
With two minutes to go, The Mikes were made to pay, as the home side’s second shot on target produced the winner, courtesy of another excellent finish.
