Match Preview: Shifnal Town v The Mikes

The Mikes will hope to build on their superb midweek victory over Walsall, when they return to Aspire Midland Football Alliance action at Shifnal Town on Saturday (3:00pm).

Many of the Shifnal team will need no introduction. With former Mikes reserve team manager John Wilson occupying the home dugout, it will be no surprise that there is a heavy sprinkling of ex-Mikes players at Phoenix Park. The most recent players to make the switch are Jamie Fisher and Jamel Fuller, who both started the season on the bench at Boldmere. The latter scored the winner for Shifnal at Oadby last Saturday.

Manager Rob Mallaband looked forward to the contest: “There is a real buzz about the place after Tuesday’s performance. We’ll be aiming to take that form into Saturday’s game”.

Last year’s contests were both memorable games. On the opening day of the season, the Mikes were a goal down after barely 15 seconds, but came back strongly in the second half to win thanks to a Jon Williams hat trick following Ricky Baker’s equaliser.

In the away fixture, the Mikes looked dead and buried trailing by two goals with 5 minutes to go, but Jason Holmes’ superb last minute header rescued an unlikely point.
