The Mikes completed a maximum return from two outings against Leicestershire opposition, following up Saturday’s win at high flying Coalville with a convincing win over Friar Lane & Epworth. Their 3-1 success moves them up to seventh in the table.
The home side were quickest into their stride and dominated proceedings and the visiting keeper was kept busy, making four good first half saves. He was beaten twice, firstly when Tom Law’s exquisite pass was deftly guided home by Jason Holmes to open the scoring.
It was 2-0 before the break when Kirk Smith’s free kick was headed onto his own bar by a defender, and birthday boy Matt Hawker reacted quickest to head home from close range to open his account for the season.
The visitors enjoyed more possession after the break and squandered a good chance in the opening exchanges. Sean Butler then saved well, before the Mikes made the game safe. Sam Simmonds met Ricky Baker’s corner and the ball seemed to cross the line, before Hawker fired home the loose ball to make sure.
Substitute Tom Clews had a late goal controversially disallowed for offside, which seemed to disrupt the Mikes’ concentration, allowing the visitors to reduce the arrears with the last kick of the game.
Craig Feasey was satisfied “Overall it was a good performance. It was disappointing to miss out on a clean sheet, but it was a comprehensive win”.
