Mikes smash seven
Wednesday 28th April 2010 – 7:45pm
Highgate United Reserves 0-7 The Mikes Reserves
Midland Football Combination Reserve Division
The Mikes Reserves maintained top spot in the table, returning from the coppice with maximum following a 7-0 drubbing of a youthful Highgate United.
On a bumpy rock hard pitch, The Mikes played some lovely football but were grateful to a set piece to take the lead midway through the first half. Andre Gonzales’ superbly flighted free kick was emphatically headed home by Richard Dunleavy. Johaine Thompson added two to his tally with excellent strikes from the edge of the box, giving the Mikes a three goal cushion at the break, although they had a let off at 2-0 when a superb free kick crashed off the post and bounced to safety off Adam Jenkins.
The Mikes moved swiftly to quash any thoughts of a home comeback. Gonzales found the top corner with a stunning free kick, before substitute Adam Morton finished delightfully after being played in by fellow sub James Walker. Walker claimed the sixth when Sam Woolley could only help his effort into his own net, while Marlo Barrett rounded off the scoring with a text book header from a Kieran Robinson corner.
Rob Clarke was pleased: “This was a banana skin for so many reasons. After winning the cup final on Saturday, there is always a chance of “after the lord mayor’s show”. The pitch was awful and they had a lot of young lads determined to prove a point. The attitude, focus and determination was first class. What pleased me most was that we kept on doing the right things, even when the game was clearly won. It was important that we kept our good habits and also defended properly. We go into the weekend’s games in positive mood, but under no illusions of the task ahead”.
