Chasetown Reserves 1-2 The Mikes Reserves (aet 1-1 at 90 minutes – agg 1-2)
Midland Football Combination Challenge Trophy – Semi Final Second Leg
The Mikes Reserves produced a performance full of grit and character to come back from a goal down to defeat Chasetown in extra time. They will now round off their season with a trip to Barwell for the final, which is scheduled for Thursday 6th May (7:45pm).
The hosts had the better of the first half, but neither keeper was really troubled until just before half time, when a low 20 yard drive deflected off Mikes skipper Cam Fowler and flew into the bottom corner.
The Mikes started the second half more positively, and got on level terms when Richard Dunleavy headed an Andre Gonzales corner back for Johaine Thompson to nod home from close range.
Chasetown keeper Green saved bravely at the feet of Thompson before Adam Jenkins produced a wonder save to keep out a late close range header and the tie went to extra time.
The Mikes started well and gained an early advantage when Ton Clews was hauled down in the box and Jorma Seabourne stepped up to confidently despatch the spot kick.
The Mikes defended resolutely to keep the home onslaught at bay, and register their third successive Challenge Trophy final appearance.
Joint manager Rob Clarke was understandably pleased “There was little to choose between the two teams again and I’m sure it was a good watch for the spectators. We struggled to get into the game and half time was good for us after they had scored. We started the second period well and deserved to get level. I felt we were the better team after that, but Jenko pulled out a worldy to take it to extra time. Getting the lead early was critical, and Tom Clews caused them problems when he came on, and Jorma showed great nerve to slot the penalty. We really had to dig deep, and I couldn’t have asked for more in terms of grit and character. We've won nothing yet though, so we need to keep our feet on the ground and we go again at Gresley on Thursday. That will be equally tough. ”
