Heather St John Reserves 0-0 The Mikes Reserves

Midland Football Combination Reserve Division

The exertions of the last week finally caught up with The Mikes reserves, as they drew their first blank in the league this season. The Mikes were unable to turn their territorial domination into a goal on a sun drenched afternoon at the excellent St John’s Park.

The Mikes had a number of chances, but their day was probably best summed up by three incidents. In the first half, a goal bound header from a corner hit Jamel Fuller on the line as he tried to get out of the way. Adam Swain had a second half thunderbolt superbly tipped onto the post and the rebound full kindly for the home team. The in the dying moments, Will Hutt’s drive was parried into the air by the keeper, before bouncing over the head of the challenging Johaine Thompson to allow the recovering keeper to tip the ball over the bar.

Rob Clarke was philosophical “We did everything but score. There were a lot of tired legs out there after a heavy week. We could have done without the hottest day of the year after extra time on Monday and playing Thursday. It clearly had an effect, but the desire and football was there, just not the finishing touch today. Although we were desperate to score, it’s easy to lose these games to a sucker punch late on, so keeping the clean sheet to come away with a point was crucial. I couldn’t ask for more from the lads at the moment, they are a fantastic group”.

Despite their disappointment on the day, the Mikes will be buoyed by the fact that they retain top spot, with Barwell beating Chasetown. The Mikes visit the Scholars on Tuesday for a mouth watering clash.

Clarke added “Tuesday is a massive game, but it’s not a title decider. Whatever happens, Quorn and Barwell are right in the mix and we have to visit both before the end of the season. If we are going to do it, we’ll have to do it the hard way! The top four will probably stay the same, but could finish in any order. There is a lot of football to be played yet, but it’s great that it’s going to be such a close and exciting finish. The young lads in all of the squads can only benefit from the experience of playing in games with plenty at stake. It will only help their development, which is what reserve team football is all about”.
