Chasetown Reserves 3-4 The Mikes Reserves
Midland Football Combination Reserve Division
The Mikes Reserves came out on top in the sixth meeting between the teams, keeping their place at the top of the table in the process.
The Mikes started in the worst possible fashion, going behind after three minutes, but were soon back on level terms when Tom Clews finished neatly after Andre Gonzales quick free kick deflected into his path. Gonzales then put the Mikes into a 2-1 half time lead with an emphatic penalty after Johaine Thompson was upended by home keeper Green.
The Mikes extended their lead with a goal of the season contender. Half time sub James Walker collected Green’s headed clearance and colly lobbed the covering defence from fully 40 yards. The arrears were reduced when the home side were awarded a spot kick, before Jack Stone appeared to have made the game safe, giving the Mikes a 4-2 lead with a towering header from a Gonzales corner.
The home side came back again and ensured a nervous end, reducing the arrears in stoppage time, but their was little time to press for an equaliser and the Mikes held on comfortably.
Joint manager Rob Clarke was delighted “Our warm up was rubbish today, which is unusual. After going a goal down so early, I must admit I feared the worst. We needed a break and got it with a kind bounce for the equaliser. Similar happened at out place and Chasetown capitalised and won the game. Today was our turn. There was again little between the teams and these are the margins. The desire today was superb again and I couldn‘t have asked for more. This is a big result that we really needed, but nothing is done yet. It just means that we go into Saturday‘s final in a positive frame of mind”.
