The Mikes reserves shrugged off the exertions of Monday’s extra time victory as they climbed to the top of the table thanks to a powerful performance, registering an excellent victory from a tough trip to Derbyshire.
The Mikes were rocked by the early loss of skipper Cam Fowler with a nasty looking ankle injury as he fell awkwardly making a challenge. The Mikes shuffled the pack, with Johaine Thompson coming on and Tom Clews dropping into midfield.
They soon took the lead however, when Andre Gonzales whipped in a delicious free kick which flew in off a combination of leading goalscorer Johaine Thompson and a defender. It was two when Thompson laid the ball back to Tom Clews who directed a lovely shot into the bottom corner from 15 yards.
The Mikes were content to play on the break in the second half, and sealed the points when Adam Swain cut inside to drive home a low shot from 20 yards.
Rob Clarke was delighted “This was always going to be a really tough fixture, even without playing extra time on Monday. Gresley have caused us problems in both of the previous encounters, so to win 3-0 is a massive credit to the lads. Scoring first was critical and we were comfortable once the second had gone in. It’s great to go top of the league, but we’ve achieved nothing yet. We face another tough trip up the M42 on Saturday, when we go to Heather so we’ll need to dig deep again.”
Clarke also paid tribute to skipper Cam Fowler “He’ll be a big loss for however long he’s out. He’s been very influential in recent games and is a massive presence in the dressing room. On the way back, I spoke to him as he was in the waiting room at the hospital. I sincerely hope he doesn’t, but he could well miss the run-in and probably both finals. However, all he could talk about was winning the game and being top of the league. That’s a mark of his character”
