Reserves Reaction: The Mikes title hopes extinguished

Quorn Reserves 3-1 The Mikes Reserves
Midland Football Combination Reserve Division
Any feint title hopes were extinguished at Farley Way, as Quorn inflicted The Mikes’ first defeat against Reserve League opposition since last October, a run of 22 games in all competitions.
The home side probably just shaded the first half, with few chances created at either end. The Mikes seized the upper hand shortly after the break, when Andre Gonzales turned his marker inside out before centring for Adam Morton to guide home a superb header from 12 yards.
The home side hit back with two scruffy goals in three minutes that knocked the stuffing out of the Mikes. To their credit, The Mikes came back again, with Adam Swain and James Walker going close, before a late free kick strike sealed the points for the home side.
This means that the Mikes are likely to finish in third place. Quorn currently head the table, but Chasetown need two wins and a plus six goal difference from their last two games to take the title on goal difference.
Rob Clarke reflected “I’m really proud of the lads for the way they have played this season. They played themselves back into contention, but the amount of games we’ve had to catch up probably caught up with us in the end. Six away games to finish including three out of the top four was always a big ask, but we took it right to the end. The lads will have learned a lot from the last few months. If they can keep that winning mentality through their careers they will do well. Congratulations to Quorn who have gone on a great run to overtake us, but Chasetown probably look favourites after their result on Monday.”
The Mikes Reserves have another crack at silverware at Barwell on Thursday night, hoping to round their season off with a third successive Challenge Trophy success.
