Nawroz Win Inaugral Final at BSM

Last Night, Kurdish giants, Nawroz, beat a diverse Daban team on penalties infront of over 100 fans at the BCL grand final at Boldmere St.Michaels Ground after the game finished 1-1 after extra time

Nawroz kept their cool in the penalty shootout to get a deserved victory after dominating much of the game and creating the best chances, even after being reduced to 10 men just before equalising.

Daban         1   -   1       Nawroz
Vijay 20                        Hasan 65
Rebeen - sent off after 63 minutes.

after extra time, Nawroz win 5-4 on penalties.

Kurdsat TV were in Boldmere on Wednesday night to witness the historic first final in the new BCL, the Birmingham Community League, set up by ASC and Matt Kendall, Hat-trick Officer to allow teams from new and emerging community groups a stepping stone into league football.

The league, which has been recorded on this website over the past months culminated in a memorable final, where Nawroz, who only made it into the semis on goal difference by virtue of scoring one goal more than rivals Al Noor, deservedly beating Daban in a tightly fought final game full of drama.

For the first 20 minutes the Chelsea style international blend of Daban looked the more capable outfit, with their midfield engine, Sufyan, busily mopping up play and playing simple passes out of defence.  It was however a poor defensive error at the back for Nawroz that opened the scoring for the blues.  The centre back tried an ambitious clearance over hs head, and the ball fell kindly to striker Vijay, who popped it over the keeper who had rushed out to try to rescue his defence, when perhaps remaining in the goal would have been better.

This was after 20 minutes where it looked as though Nawroz's nerves had got the better of them and it was going to be a long night for the red and whites, who had brought the majority of fans to the game.  The occasional long ball from Nawroz did expose what looked like a slow rearguard of Daban and the keeper was not looking confident, there was a way back into the game.  Daban had the ball in the back of the net a few minutes later as well, that would have made it 2-0, but it was ruled out for offside.

This let off seemed to spur the reds into action and they were beginning to believe in themselves, striker Hasan had two totally golden opportunities infront of goal that he missed in the first half, that made some members of the crowd draw comparisons with Chris Owelumo's recent miss for Scotland.  Hasan even managed to block a goalbound header from a teammate minutes later to make an unfortunate hat-trick.  Nawroz were creating chance after chance, and Daban were fading.

The halftime break brought no respite for the Blues as Nawroz pressed forward with Daban creating next to nothing.Despite the quality of their play it was a scrappy equaliser that the previously hapless striker, Hasan pushed the ball home from close range in the 65th minute to send the majority of the crowd wild.It was moments before this that influential and competitive frontman, Rebeen had been sent off for 2 bookings.  Rebeen doesn't offer a huge goal threat but he is a good leader of the line and holds the ball up well.  The crowd started to belive that Nawroz, with their superior fitness could hold on...

And hold on they did until extra time, and beyond, even creating a couple of half chances through some neat play and the Chilean star import, Ruben, who was working the right hand side. Midfielder Wrya was running the show in midfield and displaying superhuman fitness in the extra period and the clock kept ticking with no one willing to show that killer touch in front of goal.

When the final whistle blew the fans assembled by the goal by the clubhouse for the penalties, eager to find out where the cup would go.

With the players all lined up in the centre circle it was now a test of nerves, and up stepped Ian Hamilton from the Blues, a defender from the old school who obviously had the nerves for the job.  He blasted a poor penalty straight at the keeper who was ecstactic.  Daban then converted their penalties blow for blow with Nawroz, with all the efforts of a high standard, and finally up stepped the big number 4 for Daban, who had held the backline up well all game.  He put the ball away but the penalty had to be re-taken due to the ref not having blown his whistle.  It was a real test of nerves that the defender passed well, banging the ball back in the opposite corner.  But with the score 4-4 the man of the match, Wrya came forward knowing that if he scored that Nawroz would be champions...

With no sign of nerves, he put the ball away, a fitting end of a great performance from the player.

Nawroz were ecstatic and Daban deflated.

In the end the best team won, but it was a great final, one that will be remembered by all who were there for a long time.

Boldmere Host Inaugral Final

On Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008, at 7.30 pm, Boldmere St.Michaels will host the inaugural final of the Birmingham Communities League between Daban and Nawroz.

The Birmingham Community League was set up with a small grant from the Football Foundation to provide a stepping stone for football mad new community groups to get into mainstream league football.  It attracted 13 different 11 a side teams in year 1 from a variety of ethnic groups, with Somali, Sudanese, Ghanaian, Yemeni and Kurdish teams represented.  The teams were split into a group of 6 and a group of 7, with all teams playing each other, with the top 2 going into the semi finals to play off to decide who goes into the final.

The League Chairman, UEFA Hat-trick Officer, Matt Kendall said, “The League was set up because of the barriers that new groups find to joining mainstream leagues, some people may feel that 11 a side is on the way out, but the enthusiasm that the teams have shown that the future is bright for Birmingham”.

Daban Team has a Kurdish base, but has added local players to their group making them a force to be reckoned with, whereas Nawroz have kept faith with their Kurdish roots and have fielded the same squad each match.  IT should be a very competitive match.

Entry to the ground for the match is free.  The BCL and Aston Sports Club would like to thank the Football Foundation and Boldmere St. Michaels for their support.

Robson, Barnes and Ziege Line Up For England V Germany Clash

Former Manchester United and England skipper Bryan Robson, Liverpool and England winger John Barnes and Germany’s former Bayern Munich and Liverpool defender Christian Ziege have added their names to the England and Germany Legends squads that will face off at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane on Thursday August 7th, live on ITV4.

England v Germany: The Legends Live will pit two teams of former internationals against one another for The Derek Dooley Memorial Cup and to aid The British Red Cross China Earthquake Appeal, kicking off at 7.45pm.

Bryan Robson noted: “Legends football gets more competitive and professional with each passing year. I watched the games at Reading, Milton Keynes and Southampton and they were both great games, full of excitement and goals. It was also worth noting that the grounds were packed full of families enjoying a night out together and cheering England on in a competitive match played in exactly the right spirit.”

Robson and Barnes join an England Legends squad, managed by Peter Reid, that already includes Liverpool’s Stan Collymore, Arsenal’s Paul Merson, Manchester United’s Lee Sharpe, Sheffield Wednesday’s Des Walker and Sheffield United’s Brian Deane.

A formidable-looking Germany Legends squad already includes 1990 World Cup Winner Guido Buchwald, 1986 World Cup final midfielder Matthias Herget, 2002 World Cup final defenders Carsten Ramelow and Marko Rehmer, Spurs’ midfielder Steffen Freund, Bolton’s cult striker Fredi Bobic, former Bayern Munich defender Thomas Helmer, striker Olaf Marschall and midfielder Norbert Meier.

England will be out for revenge against the Germany Legends at Bramall Lane. The two met at Reading in 2006, Germany running out 4-2 winners. However, this is the first time such a match has been staged between the two groups featuring former international footballers only, absent of celebrities.

England v Germany: The Legends Live is the second time this summer the England Legends will face international opposition. In May, England beat the Scotland Legends 2-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium, Southampton, thanks to goals from Collymore and Steve Hodge. The England Legends will face the Irish Legends later this summer.

Tickets for England v Germany: The Legends Live are £10 for adults (over 16) and £5 for OAPs. The Legends have recently introduced a ‘Kid-A-Quid’ offer which can be booked through the Bramall Lane Box Office on 0871 222 1889. Nationally, tickets are available from www.seetickets.com. Family tickets, which admit two adults and two children are £25, hospitality packages available for £45 per person.

"He joined Boldmere St Michaels in 1943 and since then has fulfilled many roles.

Club looking to expand junior teams

We are looking to expand our links outside the current walls with a view to ‘taking on’ under the club banner teams from an Under 14 age group downwards.

In all probability they will play under the banner of Boldmere St Michaels FC and become part and parcel of the club.

We are looking to do this for several reasons not least:

To widen the club horizons
To bring more people into the club
To promote the name of Boldmere St Michaels FC on a wider scale

Do you know an existing club that is looking for a base? Please speak to me.
