Boldmere Regain the Colin Burton Memorial Shield
After a two-year stay in Tamworth, The Colin Burton Memorial Shield returns to Boldmere after Wednesday night's 3-2 victory over Mile Oak Rovers.
Watched by Colin's family, Alan Parsons' Mikes Old Boys team established a three goal lead, before being pegged back by two second half strikes as legs began to tire against their younger opponents.
The annual fixture once again gave the opportunity for former players to get together and reminisce about old times and compare expanding waistlines.
More importantly, all involved dug deep to raise valuable funds for St Giles Hospice. Paul Gregory and a great strike from Paul Welburn gave the Mikes a 2-0 half time advantage. An own goal following a Ray Gardner corner made it three, before two goals in the last 20 minutes gave the score a more respectable appearance for Mile Oak.
Before presenting the shield to Guy Naraine, Chairman Keith Fielding managed to produce another gem during his speech, observing that while "The Beast" Richard Evans used to be part of the Mikes back four, he is now big enough "to be the back four". Special mention must also go to Ian Bluck for his attempted long throw, where he looked more like Rory Delapidated.
A club spokesmen also confirmed that speculation regarding the future of Manager Alan Parsons was unfounded. Despite losing out in the last two years, the club have issued him with the dreaded vote of confidence.
